Possibly, the weirdest city I have ever visited in my life. It's like a mix between North Korea and Las Vegas.
Ashgabat is definitely the type of city that will make you hate it.. at first but once you get to know it, once you are used to the random rules they have here, you will start to enjoy it.
For example, the first day I really hated Ashgabat as I was checked by the police and secret services that scattered around the city all the time. I couldn't walk on certain streets. I couldn't take photos at random places. The police actually forced me to remove many photos from my camera. It felt like i was unwelcome to this city.
And then I got used to it. I started to know where photography is prohibited. I started to navigate the city with its bus system easily. I started to know how to behave etc.
If you are planning to visit Ashgabat. Give it a few days after the culture crash before giving this place a thumbs down. It is truly fascinating just by being in this White Marble City.
