This was my attempt at traveling east of Dili. I have heard before that the roads in Timor Leste is horrible. How hard could it be? I survived plenty of horrible buses. As it turned out, it was indeed the worst bus ride I have ever ridden on. This road that connects the 2 biggest cities of Timor Leste, Dili and Baucau, you'd think that the road would be in good condition but no. Only 15% of the roads were paved, while all of them were under construction with potholes and gravels all over the place. It was the bumpiest road I have ever traveled on.
The cities are only 125km apart, yet it took us over 5 hours to get there by bus. It was the real adventure I was asking for.
As soon as I arrived in Baucau, everything became calmer and I spent a day walking around town, surprising locals with my presence and observe how they live their lives. Life is hard outside of Dili, but everyone seems to manage quite well.
After a day in Baucau, I decided not to travel further east to Jaco island, another 8 hours bus ride and took the same bus from hell back to Dili, and explored the country elsewhere.
Maybe someday I'll be back to explore the east proper, when the road is done at least. :)
