It took me a very long time to convince my kids to try the awesomeness that is camping without a lodge! So we got a ginormous tent (there were 8 of us on the trip) that had super cryptic instructions (but was super easy once we figured it out), drove to Cross Timbers State Park (Kansas) and since it was after the start of school and super hot, few people were there and we easily scored a super huge spot right by the lake!
We roasted marshmallows and we cooked food packets in foil in the fire. It was fiercely hot, but a storm rolled through and it rained and poured and the wind howled for about 15 minutes, then it was cool and wonderful (and our tent did a perfect job of keeping out the rain).
In the morning, I discovered mosquitoes everywhere and that one of my daughters had decided it was too hot and had unzipped the mosquito netting "to get a breeze" ARGH!!!! So we all had an uncountable number of mosquito bites, so hopefully she knows not to do that again!!
In the morning we took a swim in the lake, then left for home when the temps started to soar again. Now the kids agree with me: camping is awesome!
